GDS Selected to Equip Turin Underground with Information & Advertising Displays
Global Display Solutions (GDS) Ltd., market leader in the design and manufacture of industrial displays, has been selected by the Turin Transport Group (GTT S.p.A.) and Selcom Elettronica to install information displays throughout the Turin underground rail network. All stations will be equipped with GDS's cost effective e-Signage range of monitors to provide timetable information and serve as advertising spots.
GDS's e-Signage displays have been specifically chosen for the network due to their modern design, superior quality, improved reliability and, most importantly, their enhanced durability under demanding conditions. This ground-breaking display collection provides increased protection from vandalism. The information displays utilise toughened anti-vandal glass, and are one of the only displays available on the market to be classified to IK 10 (EN50102), a standard which confirms that they can sustain knocking of 20 joules and still remain safe for users.
For this project, GDS will supply 32" displays. As the displays will be in use for the majority of the day, GDS has equipped them with a built-in thermal management system and a ventral fan mounted in a custom heat sink, to dissipate heat from the electronics. A single board computer has also been built into the display in order for passenger information to be updated from a central server.
GDS's e-Signage platform products can be supplied as stand alone video monitors or intelligent terminals. In their terminal configuration, the units can be run under Windows Xpe or Linux software packages.
Selcom Elettronica has been assigned to install the majority of the electronics inside the Turin underground stations. The new Turin underground network has been built to specifically cater for the current 2006 winter Olympics and was officially opened on 24th December 2005.
